IELTS Writing Task 2 Band 7: The Depth Fix Filipinos Miss (2026)

Photo by Khoiru Abdan on Unsplash

Why Filipino IELTS candidates with fluent English keep scoring Band 6 on Writing Task 2 — and the idea-depth fix that reaches Band 7 in three weeks.

You write fluently. Your sentences are grammatically correct. Your ideas are relevant. You finish the essay on time. And the examiner gives you Band 6. Again.

The problem is not how you write. It is how many things you try to say.

Of all the nationalities sitting IELTS globally, Filipino candidates may be the most fluent writers who consistently underperform their actual ability on Writing Task 2.

Filipino English is genuinely excellent. The Philippines has one of the highest English proficiency rates in Asia. Filipino nurses document clinical cases in English. Filipino professionals write corporate reports, tender proposals and international communications in English every day. Filipino students write university papers, theses and research reports in English from secondary school through to postgraduate level.

And Band 6 on Writing Task 2 keeps appearing on score reports.

This is not random. It is a pattern. It has a specific name — and a specific fix that works in three weeks.

The short version
  • Task 2 is marked on four equally-weighted criteria. Filipino candidates are strong on Lexical Resource and Grammar and lose the score on Task Achievement and Coherence.
  • The cause: Filipino writing culture rewards breadth — covering many ideas — while IELTS Band 7 rewards depth: two ideas developed fully.
  • The fix is the two-idea rule plus the PEEL paragraph structure, a discourse marker audit, and synonym chains.
  • From Band 6.0 to Band 7.0 is typically three to four weeks of targeted practice.

What IELTS Writing Task 2 Is Actually Measuring

Before the fix, understand the mechanism precisely. Most Filipino candidates who score Band 6 on Writing Task 2 are failing on one or two of four equally weighted criteria — and they do not know which ones because nobody has shown them the breakdown.

IELTS Writing Task 2 is marked against four criteria. Each is worth exactly 25 percent of your Writing Task 2 score.

The Four Band Descriptor Criteria

Task Achievement (25%) Did you answer the question fully? Is your position clear? Are your main ideas extended and supported — or listed and abandoned?

At Band 7, the position is clear and developed and main ideas are extended and supported — though supporting detail may over-generalise or lose some focus.

The key phrase: extended and supported. Not listed. Not mentioned. Extended.

Coherence and Cohesion (25%) Does your argument flow logically? Do ideas connect skilfully through varied means?

At Band 7, information is organised logically with a clear overall progression, and a range of cohesive devices is used flexibly.

The key phrase: clear overall progression. Not a list of points. A progression — where each idea builds on what came before it.

Lexical Resource (25%) How wide and accurate is your vocabulary?

At Band 7, the range is sufficient for some flexibility and precision, with less common items used with some awareness of style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) How varied and accurate are your sentence structures?

At Band 7, a variety of complex structures appear, error-free sentences are frequent, and grammar and punctuation are well controlled.

Where Filipino Candidates Are Actually Losing Points

Most Filipino candidates score reasonably on Lexical Resource — Filipino English vocabulary is strong. Most score reasonably on Grammatical Range — Filipino English grammar is accurate. The specific gaps for most Filipino candidates are:

Task Achievement: Band 5–6. Main ideas are mentioned but not extended. Three or four ideas appear but none is developed beyond a single sentence. The examiner sees a list, not an argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5–6. Ideas are juxtaposed rather than connected. Each paragraph covers multiple points that do not build on each other. The essay accumulates rather than progresses.

These two criteria — both pulling to Band 5–6 — drag the overall Writing Task 2 score to Band 6 regardless of how clean the grammar and vocabulary are.

The Filipino Writing Pattern That Causes Band 6

To understand why this happens, you need to understand what Filipino English education and culture actually rewards — and how it differs from what IELTS Band 7 rewards.

What Filipino Academic Writing Rewards

Filipino secondary and tertiary writing education rewards:

  • Coverage — addressing multiple aspects of a topic comprehensively
  • Balance — presenting multiple perspectives fairly
  • Breadth — showing familiarity with many dimensions of an issue
  • Warmth and engagement — writing that feels personal, relatable and communal

These are genuine strengths. In Filipino academic, professional and clinical contexts, they produce excellent writing. A Filipino nurse’s clinical notes are comprehensive. A Filipino professional’s business proposal covers all bases. A Filipino student’s essay shows wide reading and balanced consideration.

What IELTS Band 7 Rewards

IELTS Band 7 Writing Task 2 rewards something different:

  • Depth — developing two ideas fully rather than covering five superficially
  • Commitment — taking a clear position and defending it throughout
  • Precision — one specific, concrete example per idea rather than general claims
  • Progression — each sentence building on the previous one, not adding a new point

The mismatch is specific and predictable: Filipino candidates bring comprehensive, balanced, warm writing into an exam that rewards focused, committed, precise writing. The result is consistent Band 6 on Task Achievement and Coherence — not because the writing is bad, but because it is the wrong kind of good.

The Primary Fix: The Two-Idea Rule

This is the single most impactful change any Filipino IELTS candidate can make to their Writing Task 2 score.

For your next five essays: two main ideas maximum. One per body paragraph.

Not three. Not four. Not five. Two.

Each idea must be developed across three to four sentences before you move to the next paragraph. You may not introduce a second point within a body paragraph until the first point is fully extended with explanation and a specific example.

What This Looks Like in Practice

The Filipino Band 6 Pattern (too many ideas, each underdeveloped):

“There are many reasons why working abroad is beneficial for Filipino healthcare workers. Firstly, they can earn higher salaries. Secondly, they gain international experience. Thirdly, they can support their families better. Furthermore, they develop professional skills. In addition, they can achieve career advancement. In conclusion, working abroad has many benefits.”

Count the ideas: five. Sentences per idea: one each. Development: none. Mechanism: absent. Example: none. Coherence score: Band 5–6.

The Band 7 Version (two ideas, each fully developed):

“Working abroad offers Filipino healthcare workers a level of financial security that domestic employment rarely matches. A registered nurse in the NHS earns a base salary several times higher than an equivalent position in a Philippine government hospital — a difference significant enough to fully fund a sibling’s university education, support aging parents, and build a home within a single three-year contract. This economic transformation is not incidental to the decision to work abroad; for most Filipino nurses, it is the central purpose that makes every sacrifice of distance and familiarity worthwhile.

Beyond the financial dimension, international practice exposes Filipino nurses to clinical environments and protocols that develop their professional capabilities in ways that domestic healthcare settings currently cannot replicate. Exposure to electronic patient record systems, multidisciplinary team structures, and evidence-based practice guidelines — standard in NHS trusts — produces a level of clinical competence that strengthens the Filipino nurse’s professional profile permanently, whether they remain abroad or eventually return to contribute to the Philippine healthcare system.”

Count the ideas: two. Sentences per idea: four to five each. Development: mechanism explained, example specific, connection to argument clear. Coherence score: Band 7.

The vocabulary is not dramatically more sophisticated. The grammar is not dramatically more complex. The depth of development is entirely different. And depth is what the band descriptor rewards.

The PEEL Framework: How to Develop Each Idea to Band 7 Depth

The two-idea rule tells you how many ideas to include. The PEEL framework tells you how to develop each one to Band 7 depth.

P — Point State your main idea in one clear sentence. This is your topic sentence. It should be direct and specific — not vague and general.

  • ❌ Weak: “There are many advantages to this.”
  • ✅ Strong: “Remote work allows employees to redirect commuting time toward productive work, improving both output and wellbeing.”

E — Evidence or Example Give one specific, concrete example. Real is better than hypothetical, but a plausible specific example is better than a vague general one.

  • ❌ Weak: “For example, many people benefit from this.”
  • ✅ Strong: “A nurse who previously spent ninety minutes commuting to a hospital can use that time to complete professional development modules, prepare clinical documentation, or simply arrive at their shift rested rather than depleted.”

E — Explain Explain the mechanism — why your point is true, how your example demonstrates it, what the connection is between the example and your main idea.

  • ❌ Weak: “This shows that remote work is beneficial.”
  • ✅ Strong: “The cumulative effect of this recovered time — multiplied across five working days — amounts to seven and a half hours per week that shift from transit to either professional productivity or personal restoration, neither of which is trivial for a healthcare worker managing demanding clinical responsibilities.”

L — Link Connect back to your overall argument. One sentence that ties the paragraph back to the essay’s central position.

  • ❌ Weak: “Therefore, remote work is good.”
  • ✅ Strong: “This efficiency gain, invisible in traditional time-cost analyses of remote work, is precisely why organisations that have measured output rather than hours worked consistently find that remote arrangements improve rather than reduce performance.”

Four moves. Three to five sentences. One fully developed idea. That is Band 7 Task Achievement.

Apply PEEL to every body paragraph in every practice essay for the next three weeks. After three weeks, the structure becomes automatic.

The Secondary Fix: The Discourse Marker Audit

Most Filipino candidates use discourse markers — Firstly, Secondly, Furthermore, Moreover, In conclusion — as their primary or only cohesive tool. This produces the mechanical Cohesion that the Band 6 descriptor specifically identifies.

Band 7 Coherence requires cohesive devices used flexibly — meaning varied, not just present.

The audit process after every essay:

Read your essay and mark every Firstly, Secondly, Furthermore, Moreover, However (as a sentence opener), In addition, In conclusion.

Count them. If you have more than two across the entire essay — you are over-relying on structural labels rather than logical connection.

What to replace them with:

Discourse markerReplacement approach
Firstly,[Start directly with your Point sentence — no label needed]
Secondly,[Use a transition that references the previous paragraph: “A further dimension of this…” / “This financial benefit is compounded by…” / “Beyond the economic argument…”]
Furthermore,[Embed the addition mid-clause: “…which also means that…” / “…an effect that extends to…”]
However,[Embed the contrast: “While X is true, Y…” / “X does not, however, mean that Y…”]
In conclusion,[Restate your position in completely new words — the conclusion does not need a signal word]

The goal is not to eliminate discourse markers entirely — it is to ensure they are not your only cohesive tool. Pronouns, synonyms, logical connectors, and clause-level transitions should be doing the majority of the cohesive work.

The Tertiary Fix: Lexical Range for Filipino Candidates

Filipino English vocabulary is strong for clinical, professional and everyday contexts. The Lexical Resource gap at Band 7 for most Filipino candidates is not a lack of vocabulary — it is a narrower range of less common academic and analytical vocabulary that IELTS specifically rewards.

The synonym chain technique:

Before every essay, spend 90 seconds mapping your key nouns:

Example topic: “The internet has made information more accessible. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages.”

Key nounSynonyms and related phrases
internetdigital infrastructure, online platforms, networked technology, the web
informationknowledge, data, content, resources, insights
accessibleavailable, obtainable, within reach, democratised
advantagesbenefits, opportunities, positive outcomes, gains
disadvantagesdrawbacks, challenges, limitations, negative consequences

Use these chains throughout the essay — cycling through synonyms rather than repeating the same noun. This demonstrates Lexical Resource variety without forcing artificial vocabulary into your writing.

Topic vocabulary building:

The same eight topic categories appear repeatedly in IELTS Writing Task 2. For each category, build a vocabulary set of ten to fifteen less common but precise terms before your exam.

Topic CategoryLess Common Vocabulary to Add
Technologydigital proliferation, algorithmic curation, technological determinism, data sovereignty
Healthcarepreventative medicine, healthcare equity, evidence-based practice, patient-centred care
Educationpedagogical approaches, lifelong learning, vocational training, academic attainment
Environmentecological sustainability, carbon footprint, environmental stewardship, biodiversity
Workoccupational mobility, remote collaboration, labour market flexibility, work-life integration
Societysocial cohesion, cultural homogenisation, demographic shift, civic engagement
Governmentpolicy implementation, regulatory framework, public accountability, fiscal responsibility
Globalisationeconomic interdependence, cross-cultural exchange, multinational enterprise, trade liberalisation

These terms do not need to be forced into every essay. They expand your available range — which is what Lexical Resource Band 7 measures.

Band 6 vs Band 7: The Same Essay at Two Levels

Here is the same Task 2 question addressed at Band 6 and Band 7 — using the same position and the same ideas.

Question: Some people think that governments should make healthcare free for all citizens. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 6 Version — Filipino Pattern

“I strongly agree that governments should provide free healthcare for all citizens. Firstly, healthcare is a basic human right. Everyone deserves access to medical treatment regardless of their financial situation. Secondly, free healthcare reduces inequality in society. Poor people cannot afford expensive medical treatment. Thirdly, it improves the overall health of the population. When people can see doctors freely, they stay healthier. Furthermore, it reduces the burden on emergency services. In conclusion, free healthcare benefits everyone in society and governments should implement it immediately.”

Examiner assessment: Six ideas. Each one sentence. No mechanism. No specific example. No development. Cohesion through Firstly/Secondly/Thirdly — mechanical. Task Achievement: Band 5–6. Coherence: Band 5–6.

Band 7 Version — Depth Applied

“Universal healthcare is not merely a policy preference but a structural prerequisite for a functional society — one that governments are both morally and economically obligated to provide. When medical treatment is contingent on personal wealth, preventable conditions escalate into costly emergencies: a diabetic patient who cannot afford routine monitoring will eventually present to an emergency department in crisis, consuming far greater public resources than the regular consultation that would have prevented the deterioration. The fiscal argument for universal access, paradoxically, is as compelling as the humanitarian one.

The counterargument — that universal provision creates unsustainable government expenditure — misreads the economics of healthcare systems that have implemented it successfully. Countries such as Canada, Germany and Australia fund universal healthcare through progressive taxation at levels their populations have consistently endorsed, while simultaneously achieving health outcomes that exceed those of nations where private insurance dominates. The cost of provision is real; the cost of non-provision, borne through emergency services, lost productivity and systemic inequality, is consistently higher.”

Examiner assessment: Two ideas, each fully developed across four to five sentences. Specific mechanism (diabetic patient escalation). Specific examples (Canada, Germany, Australia). Logical progression between ideas. Cohesive devices varied — pronouns (it, one, the), synonyms (provision/access/treatment), logical connectors (paradoxically, simultaneously). Task Achievement: Band 7. Coherence: Band 7.

The position is identical. The ideas are not dramatically more sophisticated. The development is entirely different.

Writing Task 1 for Filipino Candidates: The Overview Gap

Writing Task 1 is worth one-third of the Writing module — not negligible. For Filipino candidates, the most common Task 1 error is not in the data description itself but in the overview.

The overview is the most important paragraph in Academic Writing Task 1.

Many Filipino candidates dive directly into data — specific numbers, percentage changes, year-by-year comparisons — without first stepping back to state what the data shows overall. This costs Task Achievement marks every time because the examiner cannot see that the candidate understands the big picture of what the graph or chart is communicating.

The two-sentence overview formula:

Sentence 1: State the most significant overall trend or comparison. Sentence 2: State the most notable exception, contrast, or secondary pattern.

“Overall, online retail sales increased substantially across all four regions over the ten-year period, with the Asia-Pacific region recording the most dramatic growth. Notably, European sales, while rising, remained significantly lower than those of other regions throughout the entire period.”

Write your overview after your introduction and before your data paragraphs. Never begin with data. Always step back to the big picture first.

How PassQuest Tracks Your Writing Task 2 Progress

The challenge with Writing Task 2 improvement is knowing which of the four criteria is still holding you below Band 7. A general impression of “this essay is better” is not enough — you need criterion-level data.

PassQuest tracks every Writing Task 2 session across all four band descriptor criteria separately:

  • Task Achievement — specifically whether your ideas are extended and supported or listed and abandoned
  • Coherence and Cohesion — specifically whether your cohesive devices are varied and flexible or mechanical
  • Lexical Resource — specifically whether your vocabulary range is sufficient and your less common items are accurate
  • Grammatical Range — specifically whether your structure variety and accuracy are at Band 7 level

After every session, your gap map shows which criterion is still below your target band. Your Writing readiness score updates in real time. When Task Achievement and Coherence both show Band 7.0 consistently across multiple sessions — you are ready for exam day on Writing.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Filipino IELTS candidates score Band 6 on Writing Task 2 despite fluent English?
Because IELTS Band 7 Writing Task 2 rewards idea depth over idea breadth — and Filipino English education and communication culture tends to produce writing that covers multiple ideas quickly rather than developing one or two ideas deeply. This produces Band 5–6 on Task Achievement and Coherence and Cohesion regardless of how fluent or grammatically accurate the writing is.
What is the most common Writing Task 2 mistake for Filipino IELTS candidates?
Covering too many ideas superficially — listing four or five points across two body paragraphs without developing any of them beyond a single sentence. IELTS Band 7 requires main ideas to be extended and supported. Two fully developed ideas score higher than five underdeveloped ones every time.
How do I improve from Band 6 to Band 7 on Writing Task 2 as a Filipino candidate?
Apply the two-idea rule to your next five essays — two main ideas maximum, one per body paragraph, each developed using the PEEL framework across three to four sentences. Apply the discourse marker audit to ensure cohesive devices are varied rather than mechanical. Most Filipino candidates at Band 6.0 reach Band 7.0 on Writing within three to four weeks of this targeted practice.
How many ideas should I include in IELTS Writing Task 2?
Two main ideas — one per body paragraph — each developed fully using Point, Evidence/Example, Explain and Link. The instinct to cover more ideas is understandable but consistently produces Band 6 Task Achievement. Depth is what the band descriptor rewards at Band 7 and above.
Does PassQuest help with IELTS Writing Task 2 for Filipino candidates?
Yes. PassQuest tracks every Writing Task 2 session across all four band descriptor criteria — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range — and shows specifically which criterion is holding your score below Band 7. Your Writing readiness score updates after every session.
